An interview with 2 Time Emmy Winner / 6 Time Telly Winner W. F. Walsh

Could a major Hollywood star be kidnapped on Oscar night in a drug war of revenge against the United States?

Bill,

Who are your influences?
Tom Clancy I think is the most influential along with John Grisham and Pat Conroy.

When did you begin writing?
I began writing television pilot treatments back in the late 90’s and pitching series ideas to producers and networks.  One of those was called “San Juan ICE” which had to do with the Immigration Customs Enforcement after 9/11 and based in Puerto Rico.  The pilot was the inspiration for my first book THE UMBRELLA OPTION.  One of the main characters is an ICE agent based in Miami and finds himself uncovering a plot to smuggle a nuclear device onto a cruise ship and sail into South Florida to detonate.

How do you come up with your stories, characters, character names, POV, etc?
That’s a good question! LOL  When I jog, I get ideas in my head then go back and write.  I like setting up situations, putting characters into them, then getting them out.

Do you work from an outline?
Not really.  I have an idea of where I want the story to go.  Sometimes I will write down some ideas and go back to those on the list.  I do have a good list of characters with who they are, how old, etc.; so that I can refer back to them and bring them in and out.

Tell me about your favorite scene in your novel.
I enjoy the opening sequence and the action associated with it along with who escapes and who does not.

Can you tell us a little about your writing philosophy?
Give the reader a great ride they don’t want to get off.

Have you ever tried writing in any other genres?
Not yet but thinking of a non-fiction book called “IT’S OKAY IF YOU INTERRUPT MY DINNER!” about the real life of being a celebrity, away from the spotlight and red carpets.

Do you have any interesting writing-related anecdotes to share?
I write on my back porch a lot and write when I travel.  I used to fly a lot for my military job overseas and   would write on those long 8-10 hour legs.  I wrote some of The Umbrella Option while flying into places like Baghdad and Afghanistan.  I also wrote some of Red Carpet Ransom while in some Central and South American countries.  Being in a place you’re characters are gives you the ability to really put the reader in the setting with the flavor, smells, visuals, etc. you experience.

Do you listen to music as you write?
Sometimes I do but mostly in the background.

I really appreciate your time Bill  ~  I would believe my reader's reciprocate
