An interview with Austin Dragon

Austin Dragon
Hollow Blood: The Hunt for the Foul Murderer of Ichabod Crane  ~ 2015

Austin,

Thank you for taking your time for me

Who are your influences?

Actually, good movies and television tend to influence me a lot more than literature these days. The reason is because prior to my first book being published three years ago, I hadn’t written a word of fiction in almost fifteen years, and was reading exclusively non-fiction during that time.

When did you begin writing?

My first book was at three years old (my Mom saved it for me and I still have it) and I was writing mystery novels in elementary school.

How do you come up with your stories, characters, character names, POV, etc?

They just come to me. My science fiction After Eden thriller series is what spurred me to writing again, but inspiration can come from anywhere—another book, a movie, a political issue, a real life story, a song, a billboard, magazine article, etc.

Do you work from an outline?

Many would be very surprised by how sparse of an outline I use before I start writing. I do a lot of research, but all I finally need to start is the list of chapters. No in-depth character analysis, synopsis, or any of that. I did that fifteen years ago but it’s all done on the subconscious level nowadays.

Tell me about your favorite scene in your novel(s).

In Hollow Blood, it would be the final showdown with a major character in the second section. In Hell’s Menagerie, it would be the whole sequence of the Keeper arriving at the Zoo, meeting her one hundred sister-daughters, and so on.

Can you tell us a little about your writing philosophy?

Write every day until I have the first draft.

Have you ever tried writing in any other genres?

I actually start this year. Besides science fiction, I debut classic horror with Hollow Blood; this summer I debut mystery and young adult; and in the fall will be fantasy.

Do you have any interesting writing-related anecdotes to share?

I share them on my Pinterest account. Here’s two:  "You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.” Robin Williams and “Good things come to those who hustle while they wait.” - Thomas Edison

Do you listen to music as you write?

Depends on my mood, but I often do when it’s an action sequence.

On the behalf of my reader's Austin, I thank you for taking your time for us
