Beware a Treasure
Darkly…
Who are your influences? My favorite authors are Maria V.
Snyder, Tamora Pierce, Anne Bishop, and Jacqueline Carey. Their books inspired me to create a fantasy
world of my own. If I think about influences for TREASURE DARKLY in a different
sense, though, my main influence would have to be my mother. She introduced me to the old Westerns and I
imagined what those stories would have been like with steampunk elements.
When did you begin writing? I began as soon as I could talk.
My grandmother would use a tape recorder to keep track of my stories and
later on she would write them down.
Eventually I started using the computer – I’m going to say around 6th
grade – and then the novels just flowed.
How do you come up with your stories, characters,
character names, POV, etc? I usually
look through a baby name book to come up with names. For POV, I will try out different ones on the
beginning chapters to see which one sticks.
As for the stories, I wait to see what comes to me in dreams.
Do you work from an outline? I
really can’t. I tried once, and I lost
interest in the manuscript. I like to
allow the characters to do what they want.
I do keep a notebook so I can keep track of what characters look like
and the names of places.
Tell me about your favorite scene in your novel. The
scene that sticks out to me the most is when Clark takes Mrs. Treasure back to
his old stomping ground. I can almost
taste the dust and feel the desert heat.
Can you tell us a little about your writing
philosophy? Write what you imagine. The
characters and story nag at me to release them onto paper, so what else can I
do but obey?
Have you ever tried writing in any other genres? I
write mainly in young adult, but I have tried my hand at horror and historical
fiction. In between novels, I write
short stories so I can experiment with new settings and perspectives.
Do you have any interesting writing-related anecdotes to
share? I actually came across one
today. A fellow author and friend let me
know she had never heard of absinthe, which is a drink that is mentioned in
TREASURE DARKLY. After we discussed it,
she then found it another book. I also
saw it as a necklace in a steampunk catalogue.
Absinthe is going to be the word of the day.
Do you listen to music as you write? I
tried that in the past, but the music kept distracting me. Now I rely on good
old peace and quiet. I will lock myself
into the office and just write.
