An interview with Jason Mosberg

Grift follows a crew of orphaned teenage con artists living in Las Vegas.

Jason,

Who are your influences?
Kem Nunn, Raymond Chandler, Vince Gilligan, Robert Towne, Ted Griffin, Christopher Nolan, and many others.

When did you begin writing?
I wrote comic books and short stories when I was 8 years old, but I took a 12-year hiatus before picking back up the pen.

How do you come up with your stories, characters, character names, POV, etc?
My brain is always going through a constant state of brainstorming. It’s very useful. And very counterproductive to sleeping, communicating, and behaving like a normal human being.

Do you work from an outline?
Most definitely. 95% of writing for me is either brainstorming, outlining, or editing.

Tell me about your favorite scene in your novel(s).
I can’t tell you about my favorite scene because it would give away a major plotpoint, but my second favorite scene is the novel’s opening chapter. I think it’s a really fun introduction to the character of Piper, seeing her execute a con.

Can you tell us a little about your writing philosophy?
I believe authors should try to simultaneously surprise, challenge, and gratify readers.

Have you ever tried writing in any other genres?
Not another genre for novels, but I have written screenplays in a variety of genres including comedy, drama, and science fiction.

Do you have any interesting writing-related anecdotes to share?
I once got a writing-related gig for arguably Hollywood’s biggest movie star and got fired via Fed Ex.

Do you listen to music as you write?
Sometimes, but never music with lyrics.
